Martha Akech was six years old when war consumed her life. In a moment, she lost her village, her security, and her parents. In that moment she also became a parent herself, the sole provider for her three-year-old sister. Her story of survival as she crisscrossed southern Sudan and finally made it to a refuge camp in Kenya, then a new life in America, is interwoven here with that of the “lost boy” who would eventually become her husband.
